Southern Maine High School Sailing was founded by 12 Waynflete School sailors in the fall of 1999 as Casco Bay High School Sailing. It is an all-encompassing high school sailing program for fall and spring seasons that admits any Portland area student in the 8th grade or above. Entering the 2005-2006 school year, SMHSS had an overall enrollment of over 40 students from 8 Portland area high schools, including Yarmouth, Falmouth, Portland, Catherine McAuley, South Portland,
Cape Elizabeth,
Scarborough and North Yarmouth Academy.
Since 1999, team members have won the Maine State High School Championship, and the Northern New England High School Championship twice. Southern Maine won the 2004 Downeast Fleet Racing Championship, the Casco Bay Bash Open Fleet Race from 2002-2004, and placed second at the 2004 NESSA Herreschoff Trophy (Women's Invitational). A number of former SMHSS sailors have gone on to sail at colleges such as Eckerd, Yale, Connecticut College, Bowdoin, Maine Maritime Academy, and others. As we continue to develop our program as Southern Maine High School Sailing, we look forward to helping more young athletes excel.
The goal of SMHSS is to provide racing opportunities for students whose schools do not yet have an official team, while "incubating" teams that will later become individual members of the New England Scholastic Sailing Association (NESSA). NESSA is our regional "league" within the national Inter Scholastic Sailing Association (ISSA), the national governing body of high school sailing in the United States.
In order for a school team to become a member of ISSA and NESSA, it must be recognized by its school's administration, either as a varsity team or a club team. Students from schools that are unable or unwilling to recognize an official NESSA team may join the Southern Maine High School team, which is allowed to compete in a limited number of NESSA events each year that do not lead to a national ISSA championship event.
