In September 2006, students from Portland High School (PHS) and Casco Bay High School (CBHS) joined forces and successfully won school committee approval for a school sanctioned sailing team at Portland High School.  Portland High School's new Sailing Team is a member of the New England Schools Sailing Association (NESSA), a division of the Inter-Scholastic Sailing Association (ISSA).

The Team invites all interested students from Portland High School and Casco Bay High School to join. High School sailing is one of the few school sport activities where girls and boys can compete with each other on equal terms. We practice at SailMaine, located at 58 Fore Street on the Eastern Prom in Portland. SailMaine is a non-profit sailing program that supports High School racing, adult sailing and junior sailing. SailMaine provides 36 Collegiate 420 class sailboats, access to the water, instruction, equipment, scholarships and sailing school facilities.
